A Cryptocurrency Subsidiary of SBI Prepares to Roll Out Support for Circle’s USDC Stablecoin
Japan Softens Stablecoin Rules, Enabling USDC Support
SBI VC Trade, a cryptocurrency subsidiary of the Japanese financial conglomerate SBI, is preparing to roll out support for Circle’s USDC stablecoin. This move comes after Japanese regulators have softened their stance on stablecoin regulations.
On March 4, SBI VC Trade announced the completion of the first registration related to stablecoin transactions, enabling the firm to start processing USDC (USDC) transactions. This makes SBI VC Trade one of the first financial platforms in Japan to offer cryptocurrency trading in USDC.
USDC Trading Trial and Full-Scale Rollout
The platform plans to launch a USDC trading trial for selected users on March 12 and expects a full-scale USDC rollout in the near future. This will allow users to trade USDC, a popular stablecoin pegged to the US dollar, on the platform.
Japan Opens Up to Over seas Stablecoins
SBI VC Trade CEO Tomohiko Kondo confirmed the news on X, stating that the platform had received a notification from the Kanto Regional Financial Bureau’s Tokyo office regarding the registration of an electronic payment instrument trading business operator.
“SBI VC Trade has become the first and only company in Japan to obtain a so-called stablecoin license,” he wrote. “We will continue to work towards full USDC support.”
A Development in Stablecoin Regulations in Japan
SBI VC Trade’s news marks a significant development in stablecoin regulations in Japan. In 2023, Japan reportedly lifted the ban on foreign stablecoins, and in February, the country’s Financial Services Agency (FSA) approved a report from a working group recommending policy changes easing stablecoin-related regulations.
Conclusion
The move by SBI VC Trade to support USDC stablecoin marks a significant step forward in the development of the cryptocurrency space in Japan. With the country’s regulators softening their stance on stablecoin regulations, it is likely that we will see more platforms in Japan offering support for USDC and other stablecoins in the future.
