Wildcard Migrates NFTs to Ethereum Mainnet, Eyes Token Launch

The Wildcard Story

Wildcard is an upcoming, crypto-optional PVP battle game that has been in development for years. Players can run around a 3D battlefield, throw cards that turn into powerful creatures, and spectate matches to earn rewards. The game is being developed by Playful Studios, a team led by CEO and co-founder Paul Bettner, who has worked on popular games like Words With Friends and Age of Empires.

Challenging the Crypto Landscape

However, building a game with crypto tie-ins is a challenging task. Bettner describes it as "building games while wandering through a minefield," with unaligned incentives constantly trying to hijack the game design and focus away from creating a fun game for a mass audience.

The Wildpass NFTs

Wildcard initially released the Wildpass NFTs on Polygon in 2023, giving early access to the game’s development to up to 4,444 fans. These holders, along with the game’s Discord server members, are being referred to as the "golden cohort."

Migration to Ethereum Mainnet

The Wildpass NFTs have now been migrated to the Ethereum mainnet, with the team covering the cost of gas for the move. This move allows for higher liquidity, but also comes with higher transaction fees. Bettner notes that the Wildpass is not intended to be an asset that people trade frequently, and future NFTs or rewards may be issued on a different EVM chain with lower fees.

The WC Token

Wildcard is planning to launch a token, which will be 100% community-owned with no team allocation or VC involvement. This token will not be a memecoin, and Bettner hopes to set a new standard for token launches. The recent favorable regulatory climate has given the team more confidence in launching the token.

Conclusion

Wildcard is making significant steps towards launching its game, with the migration of NFTs to Ethereum mainnet and the planned launch of a community-owned token. The team’s commitment to creating a fun game and avoiding the pitfalls of crypto tie-ins is a promising development in the gaming and blockchain space.
