Solana Down 45% since Trump Token Launch as Memecoins Divert Liquidity

Solana’s Price Continues to Struggle

Solana’s price has been under pressure in recent weeks, falling over 45% since the launch of the Official Trump (TRUMP) memecoin, from over $261 on January 18 to $143 on March 2, according to TradingView data.

Memecoin Market Attracts New Liquidity

The growing investor appetite for memecoins may be limiting Solana’s price performance, according to Dan Hughes, founder of the decentralized finance platform Radix. "Memecoins don’t tend to draw in much external capital flow; instead, existing ecosystem capital ’round-robins’ from one meme to the next," Hughes explained. "Even in the case of TRUMP, most of the inbound liquidity was outflow from other crypto assets, people selling their crypto portfolio to buy TRUMP in extreme FOMO [fear of missing out]."

Solana’s Price Performance

Solana’s price has shown resilience, recovering above $140 despite experiencing a $2-billion token unlock, which released over 11.2 million SOL tokens into circulation on March 1. However, the price remains under pressure, with some industry watchers concerned about a significant downside move for SOL.

Macro Events and Rug Pulls Limit Institutional Investment

External macroeconomic factors and recent security incidents continue to limit the upside of the crypto market, according to Hughes. "Events on the world stage are having a greater impact than in previous cycles. A much larger ratio of invested capital is institutional, who are much more cautious, having to consider a wider set of markets, factors, and variables when making decisions […]."

Conclusion

Solana’s price continues to struggle in the face of a growing memecoin market, which is attracting new liquidity from existing ecosystem capital. While the price has shown resilience, it remains under pressure, and industry watchers are concerned about a significant downside move for SOL. The crypto market’s macro environment, including recent security incidents and rug pulls, is also limiting institutional investment, making it challenging for the market to recover.
